Getting to know a city
means learning to relate to its streets and buildings
in an intimate way
says an opinion piece

I wake up and you and your teal shirt
are gone

there are times
when I don’t leave the house
when all day I paint
one rose red
like a great wound on a piece of paper

I have turned again
to the dung beetle
mooring across the field
turned again to the great Russian novel
at dawn I was convinced
I had given up a promising life as a tap dancer
we do not hold each other
and think of the assassin constructing
in the human ego
we listen briefly to the man screaming on the street
outside the window
and think we are safe
